For nine seasons (1949 to 1951, 1953 to 1956 and 1959 to 1960), he was a second baseman with the Chicago Cubs, Brooklyn Dodgers, Washington Senators, New York Giants and Kansas City Athletics.
Born Willard Wayne Terwilliger, he served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II and was a participant in the battles of Tinian and Iwo Jima. Following his return home, he enrolled at Western Michigan College where he played collegiate baseball.
Signed as an amateur free agent by the Chicago Cubs, he made his Major League debut on August 6, 1949. In 1953 while with the Washington Senators, he produced a career high 117 hits. In 666 career regular season games, he compiled 501 hits, with a .240 lifetime batting average.
After retiring as a player, he served as a bench coach for Ted Williams with the Washington Senators and Texas Rangers. He served as a coach for Tom Kelly with the Minnesota Twins (1986 to 1994) and was on staff during two world championships (1987 and 1991). Additionally, he was a Minor League manager.
