In 1961, Uwe Seeler received his nickname “Uns Uwe” following a cup match against Burnley FC, which, unusually for the time, was televised in full.
In the 1963/64 season, he was the first top scorer in the Bundesliga. As captain of the German national team, he was runner-up in the 1966 World Cup and finished third in the 1970 World Cup.

Because of his services to German soccer, in 1972 the DFB named him honorary captain of the national team, the second player ever to do so. In 1986, the Hamburg Senate endowed the Uwe Seeler Award on the occasion of his 50th birthday.
At the time, Seeler refrained from hosting any major celebrations. Instead, youth departments of soccer clubs in the Hamburg Soccer Association are awarded 5,000 euros each year. Seeler was president of HSV from 1995 to 1998. From 2003, Seeler was an honorary citizen of his hometown.
