He was best known for both his 5 Grand Slam singles titles and being the number one amateur player twice (1953 and 1955). In 1951, he won the NCAA singles championship for the University of Cincinnati and was a starter on the basketball team.
From 1953 to 1955, he won 38 singles titles and won 5 Grand Slam singles and 5 Grand Slam doubles titles. He also was the number one amateur tennis player in both 1953 and 1955. During his amateur career, he was a mainstay on the United States Davis Cup teams during the early 1950s. In 1955, he turned professional and went on win many other tournaments.
After retiring as a player in the early 1970s, he was a broadcaster for more than 30 years, including for CBS at the U.S. Open. He was inducted into the International Hall of Fame in 1970. In 2001, he began an 11-year stint as president of the Hall.
