Rock Musician. A bass player, he will be remembered for his tenure with the psychedelic band “Vanilla Fudge.” Bogert is widely regarded as one of the top bassists of his era. Born John Voorhis Bogart, III, he was raised in North New Jersey where he attended Ridgefield Memorial High School. He initially played the clarinet and saxophone, prior to learning the bass during his late teens.

He played in the music group “The Chessmen” and later in a band called “The Pigeons” who evolved into “Vanilla Fudge.” After signing with the Atco label, they released their self titled debut album which contained the cover version (originally by The Supremes) of “You Keep Me Hangin’ On.” The album achieved gold record status and the single earned a number six placing on the American Pop Charts during August of 1968. They had a Top 40 single with “Take Me For a Little While” (1968). The group separated in 1969 and Bogert went on to form the band “Cactus.”

He later formed the trio Beck, Bogert and Appice with guitarist Jeff Beck and former “Vanilla Fudge” drummer Carmine Appice. Additionally, during the 1970s he collaborated with the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and by the end of the decade, he relocated to England where he was a member of the group “Boxer.” After returning to the United States during the 1980s, he toured with guitarist Rick Derringer and recorded the solo albums “Progressions” (1981) and “Master’s Brew” (1983).
In 1999, he was acknowledged by the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his contributions to Rock Music. During the early 2000s, he formed the trio DBA with Rick Derringer and Carmine Appice. In 2010, he was forced into retirement from touring following a motorcycle accident, however he would join and record with the group “Hollywood Monsters” on their debut album “Big Trouble” (2014). He died from cancer.
