Former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea

He served as the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea during four different tenures (1975-1980, 1982-1985, 2002-2010, 2011). His earliest education was in a Japanese-run primary school during the Second World War, where he learned to read, write and count in Japanese.

He would later graduate from Sogeri High School, becoming a teacher, then radio broadcaster, before helping found the Pangu political party in 1967. The following year, he contested elections for Papua New Guinea’s new House of Assembly and became chief minister.

In 1975, when Papua New Guinea gained its independence, he became the nation’s first prime minister. He went on to serve four terms as prime minister (1975 to 1980, 1982 to 1985, 2002 to 2010, and 2011). During his final tenure in 2011, he was in ill health and hospitalized outside of the country.

His absence led to a constitutional crisis, when he and Peter O’Neill both claimed the position of prime minister. The impasse was only finally resolved with elections in 2012. In between his tenures as prime minister, he served as governor of his beloved East Sepik province from 1995 to 1999, and again from 2012 until 2016.

He was known throughout Papua New Guinea as the “Father of the Nation.” He passed away after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.
