Graduated in philosophy in 1940 with a thesis was on the aesthetics of Benedetto Croce, he came to journalism during the Second World War, directing a clandestine newspaper of the Liberal Party in Florence. In 1945 he joined the ‘Nazione del Popolo,’ organ of the Liberation Committee, two years later he was editor-in-chief of the ‘Giornale del Mattino,’ the daily newspaper directed by Ettore Bernabei.
In 1957 he was chosen by Amintore Fanfani as his spokesperson and then as head of the Press Service of his government from 1958 to February 1959. As unemployed, he was hired by Ansa in September 1960 and first appointed deputy director in January 1961 and then, a year later, director, headed the agency for nearly 30 years until 1990.

Sergio Lepri was also the author of history books, such as ‘L’ agenzia Stefani da Cavour a Mussolini’ (Le Monnier, 1999 and 2001). The last literary effort at the age of 94 with Ettore Bernabei, ‘Permesso, grazie, scusi. Dialogo fra un cattolico fervente (Ettore) e un laico impenitente (Sergio).’ From 1988 to 2004 he was a teacher of Information Language in the journalism school at the Luiss University in Rome. Many awards and honors attributed to him, including his appointment as Cavaliere di Gran Croce.
