She was best known for pushing “the comedic envelope” by dealing explicitly with the “taboo” topic of sex in the 1950s and 1960s. She also was best known for her comedy song “Bounce Your Boobies” in 1961. After graduating from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1952, she became a teacher.
Upon the advice of her then-boyfriend, she started performing at an upstate New York piano lounge. She liked what she was doing and went into show business. Her style was greatly influenced by both Sophie Tucker and Ruth Wallis.
She issued her debut record “Songs for Sinners” in 1959 and followed it with “Knockers Up” in 1960. Her song “Bounce Your Boobies” was recorded the next year and became the most famous of her music.
She would go on to produce several more albums and perform at various nightclubs around the country for the rest of her career. At the age of 60, she retired , but she would return for tribute and benefit performances.
