Born Ronald Alfred Pickup, he was best known for his role as ‘Norman Cousins’ in “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” films (2012 and 2015) and as the Archbishop of Canterbury in “The Crown” (2016).
Following his graduation from the University of Leeds in 1962, he achieved his big break after landing a television role as a physician in an episode of “Doctor Who.”

His career spanned six decades in which he appeared in 39 films and television series, including “The Day of the Jackal” (1973), “Zulu Dawn” (1979), “The Life of Verdi” (1982), “”Camille” (1984), “A Dry White Season” (1989), “Lolita” (1997), “Secret Passage” (2004), “The Time of Our Lives” (2017), and “Darkest Hour” (2017). He died following a long illness at the age of 80.
