He will be remembered for his co-penning of the screenplay for the film “Coming Home” (1978) which earned him an Academy Award. Born Robert Clifford Jones, his father was Harmon Jones a noted film and television director and editor, he was fascinated by the industry at an early age and got his break as an apprentice for editor Barbara McLean for the Tyrone Power film “Untamed” (1955).
He was an assistant editor to Louis R. Loeffler for the film “The Long Hot Summer” (1958) and following service with the United States Army with who he made training films, he made his editing debut with the John Cassavetes film “A Child Is Waiting” (1963).
Jones went on to work for such directors as Stanley Kramer on “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” (1963, Academy Award nomination), “Ship Of Fools” (1965), Ida Lupino “The Trouble With Angels” (1966), Arthur Hiller “Tobruk” (1967), “The Tiger Makes Out” (1967), Stanley Kramer “Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner” (1967, Academy Award nomination), Arthur Hiller “Love Story” (1970) and Hal Ashby “Shampoo” (1975) and “Bound For Glory” (1976, Academy Award nomination). He was a professor at the School of Cinematic Arts.
