Robert Brustein Bio
He is best remembered as the founder of the Yale Repertory Theatre and the American Repertory Theater. From 1953 to 1955, he directed stage productions at the University of Nottingham while studying there on a Fulbright Fellowship. He also taught at Cornell University, Vassar College, and Columbia University. In 1959, he became the theater critic for “The New Republic,” though he later contributed to “The Huffington Post.”

In 1964, he authored his first book, “The Theatre of Revolt: An Approach to Modern Drama.” In 1966, he wrote and narrated for the WNET television show, “The Opposition Theatre.” From 1966 to 1979, he was the Dean of the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University.
After leaving Yale for Hartford University, he founded the American Repertory Theater (ART) and the Institute for Advanced Theater Training. He was also an English professor at Harvard. At Yale Rep and ART, he supervised over 200 productions. He acted in eight of them and directed twelve. In 2014, his final book, “Winter Passages: Reflections on Theatre and Society,” was published.
