Ray Miller (1945-2021) Baseball Manager
After his playing career was over, he spent the 1974-1977 seasons working as a minor league coach for Orioles. He initially joined the Texas Rangers’ coaching staff for the 1978 campaign, but the Orioles’ pitching coach job came open, allowing him to begin the first of his three tenures in that role.
His first tenure with the O’s was marked by two World Series appearances in 1979 and 1983. In 1979 and 1980, he coached respective AL Cy Young Award winners Mike Flanagan and Steve Stone. His first tenure with Baltimore ended in June of 1985, when he was named the manager of the Minnesota Twins.
He went on to serve as the Twins’ manager until September of 1986 when he was let go by the team. In 1987, he went to the Pittsburgh Pirates to serve as their pitching coach. He remained there until 1997 when he went back to Baltimore to be their pitching coach again.
After one season, he replaced Davey Johnson as manager of the Orioles and served in this position for almost two seasons before he was let go by the team. He would come back to the Orioles for his third tenure as pitching coach in 2004-2005. His career managerial record was 266 wins and 297 losses.
