For seventeen seasons (1957 to 1973), he played at the center position in the National Hockey League with the Montreal Canadiens, Los Angeles Kings and Chicago Black Hawks.
During the course of his career, he was a key contributor to six Stanley Cup titles (1959 to 1960, 1965 to 1966 and 1968 to 1969 Montreal Canadiens). Backstrom distinguished himself individually when he was recipient of the Calder Memorial Trophy during his first season (1958-1959).
In 1,032 career regular season NHL games, he compiled 278 points, with 361 assists. In addition to his NHL career, he played four seasons in the World Hockey Association with the Chicago Cougars, Denver Spurs and New England Whalers.
After retiring as a player, he served as the head coach of the University of Denver’s hockey program. He later served as a scout with the St. Louis Blues and founded the Colorado Eagles of the Central Hockey League.
