Phil Samis Canadian Ice Hockey Player (1927-2022)
Philip Lawrence Samis was a Canadian ice hockey player. He was a defenceman. He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL). He helped the Maple Leafs win the 1948 Stanley Cup. He also played in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Pittsburgh Hornets and the Cleveland Barons. He helped Cleveland win the Calder Cup in 1951. He retired from hockey in 1953.
In 1948 he began his career after signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs where he was assigned to the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League (AHL). In the spring of 1948 he was called up to the National Hockey League (NHL) by the Maple Leafs and played in only 5 games.
During those games he assisted them in winning the 1948 Stanley Cup, before being sent back to the Pittsburgh Hornets at the start of the 1949 season. He was once again called back to the Maple Leafs for his final season in the NHL, 1950. For the remainder of his career in hockey he spent time with the Pittsburgh Hornets and the Cleveland Barons, both of the AHL. He started out playing hockey for the Edmonton Maple Leafs in his hometown. While attending St. Michael’s College he played on their team and helped them win the 1945 Memorial Cup. After retiring from hockey he became a dentist.
Samis was born in Edmonton, Alberta. After his playing career, he worked as a dentist.
Samis died on January 11, 2022, at a hospital in Greater Napanee, Ontario. He was 94.
