He is remembered for his tenure with the country-rock ensemble “Poco.” Born Norman Paul Cotton, he was raised on Chicago’s South Side and learned to play the guitar during his teenage years.
After acquiring experience in several bands which included the pop, psychedelic and country duo “Illinois Speed Press” (with guitarist Kal David) and as a solo artist, he replaced Jim Messina in the lineup of “Poco” in time to contributed to the album “From the Inside” (1971).
In 1978, they experienced commercial success with their gold album “Legend” and earned two top-20 chart placings with the singles “Crazy Love” (1979) which peaked at number 17 and the Cotton penned “Heart of the Night” (1979) which went to number 20 on the American Pop Charts.
He returned to a solo career and recorded a number of albums before reuniting with “Poco” during the 1990s and remained with them until 2010. Additionally, he reunited with Kal David in 2009 to reform “Illinois Speed Press” for a brief period.
