American academic, architect, and writer
He was best known as an author of children’s books, notably for The Phantom Tollbooth and The Dot and the Line.
He was best known for his classic children’s books “The Phantom Tollbooth” and “The Dot and the Line.” He studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania before enlisting in the Civil Engineer Corps of the United States Navy in 1954. While in the Navy, he turned to writing stories to relieve boredom.
It was also during his tenure in the Navy when he friended Jules Feiffer, who became one of America’s great satirists.
He later left the Navy and started working at a New York architectural firm. In 1961, he wrote his classic children’s novel “The Phantom Tollbooth.” Two years later, he penned the children’s novel “The Dot and the Line.” He went on to write other stories like “The Hello, Goodbye Window” in 2005, which earned a Caldecott Medal for its illustrations, and “Sourpuss and Sweetie Pie” in 2006.
