Jazz Musician, Composer. A pianist, he is remembered for his leadership with the ensemble “The Norman Simmons TrIo,” in addition to his contributions to a wide range of artists as a sideman.

He learned to play the piano during his childhood and under the influence of Duke Ellington, he first made a name for himself as a house pianist at Chicago’s Beehive Lounge.
As his reputation expanded, he acquired performance experience with Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker and it would not be long before Simmons earned the reputation as a fine composer in addition to a musician.
In 1956, he recorded his first album as leader of “The Norman Simmons Trio” with their self-titled debut album with the Argo label.
Simmons will perhaps be remembered for his arrangement of the hit “Wade in the Water” for the “Ramsey Lewis Trio” which achieved a number 19 placing on the American Pop Charts in 1966. Other artists he worked with include Carmen McRae, Johnny Griffin and Joe Williams.
