He was best known to television viewers as Dr. Daniel Auschlander on the 1980s NBC medical drama “St. Elsewhere.” He was also known for his role as the title role and villain in the 1942 film “Saboteur.”
He began his nine-decade showbiz career in theater, appearing first with Eva Le Galienne’s Civic Repertory Theater, then joining the original company of the Orson Welles-John Houseman Mercury Theater.
In addition to Welles and Houseman, the Mercury players included such actors as Joseph Cotten, Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead. In 1939, he made his “in front of the camera” acting debut in a television movie “The Streets of New York.” Three years later, he made his “big screen” debut in the Alfred Hitchcock film “Saboteur.”

He would go on to appear in such films as “Spellbound,” (1945) “Limelight,” (1952) “Audrey Rose,” (1977) “The Nude Bomb,” (1980) “Dead Poets Society,” (1989) and “The Age of Innocence.” (1993) In 1956, his appearance on an episode of “The United States Steel Hour” marked his first appearance on the “small screen.”
Besides “St. Elsewhere,” he went on to appear in such shows as “One Step Beyond,” “Night Gallery,” “Kojak,” “Wiseguy,” “Home Fires,” “Murder, She Wrote,” Seven Days,” and “The Practice.” He also directed and produced numerous television and theatrical productions.
During his career, he earned several awards for his work.
