He was best known to both film and television viewers for the numerous roles he portrayed through the years in such works as “Some Like It Hot,” (1959) “On The Waterfront,” (1954) “The Twilight Zone,” and “The Untouchables.” In his early years, he served in the U.S. Army and worked as an electrician for the New York subway system. After getting his start in acting in summer stock, he made his film debut in 1948 in “The Naked City.”
Besides “Some Like It Hot” and “On The Waterfront,” he went on to appear in such films as “The Wrong Man,” (1956) “Al Capone,” (1959) “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” (1965) “Voyage of the Damned,” (1976) “Yentl,” (1983) “The Last Temptation of Christ,” (1988) and “4 Faces.” (2001) A year later, he made his “small screen” debut on the “Actor’s Studio.”
Besides “The Twilight Zone” and “The Untouchables,” his long list of television credits included such series as “The Naked City,” “Burke’s Law,” “The Big Valley,” “The Wild Wild West,” “Mission: Impossible,” “Mod Squad,” “Gunsmoke,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Barney Miller,” “Murder, She Wrote,” and “Chicago Hope.” He also appeared in several television miniseries. He also provided the voice of Papa in the An American Tail animated film series. He retired from acting in 1999 to concentrate on his hobby of painting.

Persoff retired from acting in 1999 and pursued painting, specializing in watercolors.
His memoir, The Many Faces of Nehemiah, was published by The Autumn Road Company in July 2021.
Before his death, he lived in Cambria, California.
He died on April 5, 2022, at the age of 102 of heart failure at a rehabilitation facility in San Luis Obispo, California.
Nehemiah Persoff Personal life
In 1951, Persoff married Thia Persov, who had served as a nurse with the Palmach the elite fighting force of the Haganah during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. She died of cancer in 2021. The couple had four children, Jeffrey, Dan, Perry and Dahlia.
