Motion Picture Director, Producer, Screenwriter. His father worked for an insurance company, Michael’s appreciation for films began after seeing the Ingmar Bergman picture “Wild Strawberries” when he was a teenager.
He studied Law and History at Cambridge University and in 1963, he began his directing career in British television. A collaboration with Paul Almond resulted in the documentary “7 Up” which highlighted the lives of several seven year old children. He directed episodes of the British TV series “Coronation Street” and “ITV Playhouse”, prior to his feature film debut with “Triple Echo” (1972).

He achieved international success when he directed Sissy Spacek in her Academy Award winning portrayal of Loretta Lynn in the picture “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (1980) and had further critically acclaimed works with “Gorilla’s in the Mist” (1988) and “Nell” (1994). Other films include “Continental Divide” (1981), “Gorky Park” (1983) and the James Bond film “The World Is Not Enough” (1999).
