Earlier in his political career, he served in various government and legislative positions. He survived an assassination attempt on December 15, 1971, while serving as the ambassador of Jordan to the United Kingdom.
The perpetrators were the members of the Fatah, and the reason for the attack was the Black September events which led to the departure of the Palestinians from Jordan in 1970.
In May of 1973, he became prime minister for the first time and served for three years before stepping down in 1976. He went on to serve again as prime minister from 1984 to 1989.
From 1997 to 2009, he served as the president of the Senate of Jordan. In 2009, he retired from the political scene.
