Professional Baseball Player. He was a Dominican professional baseball player and coach in Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut on September 23, 1956, for the New York Giants and played his final game on June 27, 1969, for the San Francisco Giants. He played for several teams during his career, including the New York Giants, Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates, and the San Francisco Giants.

He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School and also served in the United States Marines from 1950 to 1952. Over his nine-season major league career, Virgil posted a .231 batting average with 174 hits, 14 home runs, and 73 RBI. After retiring from playing, he dedicated 19 seasons to coaching for the Giants, Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners.
