Kevin Long Obituary
Early Life and College Career
Kevin Long was a prominent American professional football player who made significant contributions both in the NFL and the USFL. Long began his football journey at the University of South Carolina, where he played as a fullback for the Gamecocks. His college career was marked by impressive achievements, including rushing for 2,372 yards, which placed him eighth on Carolina’s all-time list as of 2006. With an average of 5.3 yards per rush, Long was the first Gamecock to reach 1,000 yards in a season in 1975. In recognition of his outstanding performance, Long was inducted into the University of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002 and the State of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
Professional Career
Long’s professional career began when he was selected in the 7th round (195th overall) of the 1977 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He played five seasons for the Jets, demonstrating his skill and resilience on the field until 1981. However, Long is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the USFL. He played three seasons in this newly established league, starting with the Chicago Blitz in 1983. Following a full-team trade, he continued with the Arizona Wranglers in 1984, which was essentially the same team that had played in Chicago the previous year. After the 1984 season, the Arizona team merged with the Oklahoma Outlaws, and Long went on to play for the newly formed Arizona Outlaws in 1985.
