Major League Baseball Player. For seven seasons (1963 to 1971), played at the third base position with the Detroit Tigers and Washington Senators. Born Donald Ralph Wert, he attended Solanco High School in Pennsylvania and later received an athletic scholarship to attend Franklin & Marshall College. While there, he played collegiate football.
Wert played American Legion Baseball and in 1958, he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers. On May 11th, 1963, he made his Major League debut and went on to play in 78 games that year.
In 1965, he played in all 162 games and produced a career-high 159 hits. In 1968, he distinguished himself when he achieved All-Star status while experiencing a world championship with the Detroit Tigers. In 1,110 regular season games, he compiled 929 hits, with a .242 lifetime batting average. After retiring from baseball, he worked in the advertising industry. He passed away at home at the age of 86.
