United States Army General. He made history when he became the first African American to attain the rank of Lieutenant General in the United States Army. Raised in rural South Carolina on a tobacco farm, he lost his mother to cancer during his early teenage years.

He enrolled at the Chicago College of Medical Technology, and in 1945, he enlisted with the United States Army as a medical laboratory technician. Among one of his earliest assignments was overseeing a supply depot in Japan following the end of World War II. During the Vietnam War, he commanded a supply and support battalion and was tasked with commanding the Army and Air Force Exchange System.
He was promoted to logistics director for the Joint Chiefs of Staff and served as deputy chief of staff for logistics with the US Army. In 1977, he became the first African American to reach the rank of Lieutenant General. Gregg retired from the Army in 1981.
Among the honors he received are the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Army Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters. Fort Gregg-Adams in Virginia is in part named for General Gregg.
