She was best known to Australian television viewers as Shirley ‘Dean’ Gilroy on the soap opera “A Country Practice” from 1981 to 1992. She moved to England with her family at the age of 10.
Her acting debut came in the 1955 film “Stock Car.” Two years later, her career was kick-started in Britain when she represented the country in the 1957 Eurovision Song Contest. She returned to Australia in the 1960s and started singing and dancing on her self-titled variety program “The Lorrae Desmond Show.”

Her performances on the show earned her the distinction of being the first woman to win the Gold Logie Award in 1962. She also went to entertain troops in Vietnam, the Middle East, Malaysia, Singapore, Kenya and Somalia between 1967 and 1971.
Besides “A Country Practice,” she went on to appear in numerous television series for the rest of her career such as “Number 96,” “Arcade,” and “Home and Away.” She earned a Best Supporting Actress in a Series Logie in 1984 for her performance as Shirley ‘Dean’ Gilroy in “A Country Practice.” In 2021, she was included on the Australia Day 2021 Honours list as a Member of the Order of Australia for her service to the performing arts.
