Former United States Representative
US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served New York’s 3rd (1965 to 1973) and 6th (1973 to 1981)) Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives. Born into a Jewish family, he experienced performing on radio shows during his childhood which led to his receiving a scholarship to attend the Juilliard School, where he studied singing and tap-dancing.

He received his degree in Marketing from New York University and during World War II, he served as a squadron commander with the Civil Air Patrol eventually rising to the rank of colonel.
He worked in the marketing and insurance fields, as well as in television as a moderator and producer prior to beginning his career in the political arena when he succeeded US Representative Steven Derounian in Congress.
During his tenure, he supported the Johnson Administration’s legislation for the Voter’s Act (1965), as well as Medicare and Medicaid. However, he was an opponent of the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War. He served as chairman of the Select Committee on Narcotics Abuse and Control and fought for legislation which funded public education.
Additionally, during the peace talks between Israel and Egypt at Camp David in 1978, Wolff played a key role. He lost his bid for reelection to John LeBoutillier in 1980.
After leaving Washington, he served on a number of boards and hosted the PBS interview formatted program “Ask Congress.” In 2014, he was the recipient of the Congressional Gold Medal awarded by President Obama.
