American Olympic Athlete
Olympic Gold Medal Sprinter. He was best known for setting world records while earning a gold medal in both the 400 meters and 4 x 400 meter relay at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City.
He, along with fellow relay team members Larry James and Ron Freeman, wore a black beret in protest of U.S. racial problems during the medal ceremony. He first became involved in track and field events in high school and continued at San Jose State University, where he excelled at both AAU and NCAA events.

At the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada, he won gold medals in both the 400 meter and 4 x 400 meter relay. In the early part of 1968, he became a driving force in the Black Power movement that other African American Olympic athletes took part in.
During the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, he not only won gold medals in both the 400 meters and 4 x 400 meter relay, but he also set world records doing it. During the medal ceremony, he, along with fellow athletes Larry James and Ron Freeman, wore black berets as part of their Black Power protest.

He remained in track and field, first as a participant and later as a coach, for the rest of his life. He was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1993. He passed away from complications of a stroke.
