Flynt was born and raised in Lakeville, Kentucky, a small isolated community in the hills of Magoffin County in Eastern Kentucky. He had a sister named Judy who died at age 5 in 1951 of leukemia, and a brother named Jimmy, who was born in 1948. At the age of 10 his parents separated and then they moved to Hamlet, Indiana. In 1950 Flynt ran away from home and joined the army, but was discharged in 1959.
In 1960 he moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he joined the navy and worked as a radar operative on the USS Enterprise until October 1962, being discharged in 1964. He opened his first bar that same year and then another also that year, and began selling moonshine, but later opened up a more successful Hustler Club in 1968.
In 1971 Flynt owned Hustler strip clubs from Dayton, Columbus, Toledo, Cincinnati, to Akron, Ohio. This led to numerous affairs, leading to child births, and by 1973 to owning over 8 Hustler clubs with annual incomes of $75,000 to $100,000 each. Flynt wanting to expand his empire began publishing a girlie magazine, named Hustler in July 1974.
The magazine was an instant hit, but by 1975, the magazine was facing bankruptcy, until they published some revealing pictures of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and soon the magazine was back on top. Flynt continued to have illicit affairs with numerous women, and much publicized legal and criminal charges of obscenity, etc. In February 1977, he was was taken to court in Cincinnati and was convicted of all charges, but the verdict was later overturned, due to allegations of prosecution, misconduct, judicial and jury bias.
He later changed his way and became a born-again Christian, on the advice of Ruth Carter Stapleton, the sister of Jimmy Carter. In March 1978, he was shot and wounded by white supremacist and serial killer Joseph Paul Franklin outside of a courthouse in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
He would be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. His troubles continued up through the years from surgeries, drug abuse. legal battles with the likes of John DeLorean and Jerry Falwell. At one time he was ordered to pay Falwell $200,000, but Flynt took his appeal to the United States Supreme Court in December 1987, but the verdict was overturned in February 1988. Larry Flynt continues to run Hustler Magazine to this day, and is loved and hated by all.
Flynt was married to Kathy Barr from December 1968 to April 1969, Althea Leasure Flynt from August 21 1976 to her death from drug abuse which later resulted in AIDS complications on June 27, 1987, and his current wife, Elizabeth Berrios who he married on June 20, 1998.
