A pianist, he is remembered for his bluesy, soulful playing style as both a bandleader and sideman with numerous notable artists, during a career which spanned more than fifty-years. Born Julian Clifford Mance, Jr., he was raised in Evanston, Illinois and began performing when he was ten years old.
Junior Mance (1928-2021)
He acquired professional experience when he performed with saxophonist Gene Ammons in his native Chicago beginning in 1947 and following service with the United States Army, he recorded with bandleaders Sonny Sitts, Cannonball and Nat Adderley, Joe Gordon and singer Dinah Washington, among others.
In 1959, he started out as a bandleader with his self-titled, debut album “Junior” and went on to record more than three-dozen albums. In 1971, he performed on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.”
