Major League Baseball Player. For eighteen seasons (1957 to 1974), he was a left-handed pitcher with the Milwaukee Braves, Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs and Houston Astros.
Born Juan Roman Pizarro, he was signed by the Milwaukee Braves as an amateur free agent in 1956. He made his Major League debut on May 4, 1957 and pitched in 24 games with the Milwaukee Braves team which won the world series. The following season (1958), he experienced a second National League Pennant with the Braves.
While with the White Sox, he achieved all star status (1963) and the following year (1964), he produced a career-high 19 wins, as he earned all star honors for that season. He had a second stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1974 and pitched in his final Major League game during the 1974 National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
In 488 career regular season games, he compiled a 131 win, 105 loss record, with a lifetime 3.43 ERA, in 2,034 innings pitched. Following his Major League career, he continued playing in the Winter League and later served as a coach in the Chicago Cubs’ organization. He died from cancer.
