From 1995 until 2009, he served as the President of the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO). Born to Irish parents, his father a New York city bus driver would bring John to union meetings during his youth.
He joined the labor movement when he worked as a grave digger and following graduation from Iona College where he received his degree in Economics, he worked for IBM as a clerk. After joining the International Ladies’ Garment Workers, he served as a union representative in 1961 and was elevated to president in 1976.
He was elected President of the AFL-CIO in the first contest election in the organization’s history. During his tenure, the membership grew to more than 1.1 million.
