Professional Football Coach
He served as the head coach of the National Football League’s New Orleans Saints from 1970 to 1973. He played football collegiately at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a consensus All-America selection and both was 8th in Heisman voting and won the Outland Trophy (best lineman) in 1953.
In 1954, he was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the NFL Draft, but never played professional football. He went on to first in the United States Marine Corps, then served as an assistant coach at several universities, including his alma mater.His first head coaching job was with Richmond Roadrunners of the Atlantic Coast Football League. He was coaching the Roadrunners in 1970 when he was hired by the New Orleans Saints to be their coach half through the regular season. He went on to coach the Saints for the next two and half seasons before being fired by the team during the 1973 preseason.
During his tenure with the Saints, Tom Dempsey kicked a then-record 63-yard field goal as time expired on Nov. 8, 1970 and the team drafted quarterback Archie Manning in the 1971 NFL Draft. His career record was 7 wins, 25 losses, and 3 ties. After his coaching career ended, he went into the oil and gas business in Oklahoma City. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
