Joel Carver Whitburn was an American author and music historian, responsible for setting up the Record Research Inc. series of books on record chart placings.
Music Historian, Reference Book Author, Music Chart Statistician, Music Collector. Founder of Record Research Inc. Born Joel Carver Whitburn in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin in 1939, Whitburn was an avid music fan. He began collecting records (singles) in his teens during the 1950s and kept track of their chart placement in Billboard magazine.
His collection of music started to grow and he would file individual records based on the highest positions it reached on the Billboard magazine charts. In 1970, he founded Record Research Inc.
in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. He hired a team of researchers to run company operations. Whitburn turned a hobby into a career that would span five decades. The research he and his team compiled would run from 1890 to the present popular music of the 21st century.
His books featuring each recording’s peak chart position, the date it charted, how many weeks it was on the charts, the record label info and further trivia on the recordings and artists involved. Radio DJs, music fans and the music industry use his books for historical references and as a cited source.
The most popular reference books he published were the annual Top Pop Singles which traces Billboard Hot 100’s pop singles chart history. Whitburn also authored the Top 40 Hits book series.
Record Research Inc. had a relationship as a licensee for Billboard magazine lasting over five decades. Collaborating with specialty reissue record label, Rhino Records, Whitburn compiled over 150 CD compilations based on Billboard chart performance.
He owned one of the largest collections of recorded music, extensively collecting phonograph records, 45 rpms, 78 rpms and compact discs (CDs). Whitburn owned a copy of every charted Billboard Hot 100 and pop single dating back to 1936 and every charted pop album that went as far back as 1945.

Joel was born in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He started collecting records in his teens, first subscribed to Billboard in 1953, and when the Hot 100 was introduced in 1958 started recording the chart placings of records on index cards. He put together a team of researchers to examine in detail all of Billboard‘s music and video charts, and set up a licensing arrangement with Billboard.
Since then, Record Research has published reference books based on data from the various popular music charts and to date has published over 200 books, 50 of which are in the Record Research catalog. His research extends from 1890 to the present and covers many genres.
Featuring each recording’s peak position, date charted, weeks charted, label and information, and trivia on recordings and artists, Whitburn’s books are used extensively by the entertainment industry (especially radio DJs) and music fans worldwide.
