Jimmie Rodgers (1933-2021)
A guitarist of the Pop Music and Folk genres, he scored numerous Top 40 singles on the American Pop Charts including the gold records “Honeycomb” (1957), “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine” (1957), “Oh-Oh, I’m Falling In Love Again” (1958) and “Secretly” (1958). Born James Frederick Rodgers, he learned how to play the piano and guitar during his childhood.
Following service with the United States Air Force during the Korean War, he began performing on the night club circuit and had an appearance on the TV program “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts.” After securing a contract with the Roulette label, he would go on to place 14 singles on the Top 40 charts between 1957 and 1967 beginning with “Honeycomb” which achieved number one status for four weeks in 1957.

His popularity led to his own TV variety series “The Jimmie Rodgers Show” in 1959, in addition to performing on such programs as “American Bandstand”, “The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show”, “Shindig!” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” Rodgers also found acting parts in motion pictures including the starring role in “The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come” (1961) and “Backdoor to Hell” (1964) which co-starred a young Jack Nicholson.
On December 1, 1967, Rodgers was involved in a bizarre incident on the San Diego Freeway in which he suffered a fractured skull. Initially, it was thought that police were responsible however that was later disproved. Rodgers filed a lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles for police brutality and in turn a countersuit was filed against Rodgers. He ended up accepting an out-of-court settlement in 1973. He appeared in and co-directed the film musical “The World Through the Eyes of Children” (1975).
