He will be remembered for penning a string of hits for Gladys Knight and the Pips which includes “Midnight Train To Georgia” (1973). He began writing songs during his pre teenage years.
He earned a scholarship to play football at the University of Mississippi and during his years with the Rebels, at the quarterback position under legendary coach Johnny Vaught, he was a member of Mississippi’s squad which experienced a perfect 10-0 season and won a national championship in 1962.
In 1964, he received All Southeastern Conference honors and All-American mention. Following graduation, he pursued his dream of a career in the music industry and moved to California where he performed in a band called “The Gordian Knot.”
During this period, he established himself as a songwriter who would go on to pen “Midnight Train to Georgia” which became a number one single, gold record and Grammy Award winning hit for “Gladys Knight and the Pips” in 1973.
Additionally, he wrote “Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)” (1973), “Where Peaceful Waters Flow” (1973) and “Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me” (1974, achieved Gold Record status and a number 3 placing on the American Pop Charts) for Knight.
Glen Campbell and Kenny Rogers are among the many artists who recorded Weatherly’s compositions. During the course of his career, he recorded numerous albums. He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.
