Born James Robert Snyder, he attended Fordson High School in Michigan and later played collegiate baseball and basketball at Eastern Michigan University from where he received his Master’s degree in Education.
Signed by the St. Louis Browns as an amateur free agent in 1952, he spent time as a player within the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago White Sox organizations, prior to making his Major League debut with the Minnesota Twins on September 15, 1961.
He played parts of three seasons (1961, 1962 and 1964) at the second base position with Minnesota, prior to serving as a Minor League manager with the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs. In 1987, he returned to the Major Leagues as a coach for Frank Lucchesi and Gene Michael with the Chicago Cubs. In 1988, he served on Dick Williams’ coaching staff with the Seattle Mariners and succeeded Williams as manager in June of that season.
His final Major League assignment was when he served as a coach for manager Greg Riddoch with the San Diego Padres (1991 to 1992).
