Born James Eugene Seals, he will best be remembered for being half of the soft-rock duo, Seals & Crofts, which had several hits in the 1970s. Their first major hit was 1972’s ‘Summer Breeze.’ which sold over a million copies.
The following year saw the release of ‘Diamond Girl’ which was also a hit, making it to No 4 in the U.S. The duo would go on to release 11 studio albums, including ‘Seals & Crofts’ (1970), ‘Year of Sunday’ (1971), ‘Diamond Girl’ (1973), ‘Unborn Child’ (1974), ‘I’ll Play for You’ (1975), ‘Sudan Village’ (1976), ‘Lote Tree’ (1979), ‘The Longest Road’ (1980) and ‘Traces’ (2004).
He was best known as one-half of the popular 1970s soft rock duo Seals and Crofts, who were best known for their hits “Summer Breeze” (1972), “Diamond Girl” (1973), and “Get Closer” (1976). In the late 1950s, he teamed up with Dash Crofts and they later moved to California, where they wrote songs for other artists before they started recording hits of their own beginning with Summer Breeze, which hit number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1972.
They went on to record other hits such as “Hummingbird,” “Diamond Girl,” “We May Never Pass This Way Again,” and “Get Closer.” In 1980, the duo disbanded, but they reunited briefly from 1991 to 1992 and again in 2004, when they recorded their final album “Traces.”
