For eight seasons (1964 to 1972), he played at the center position in the National Hockey League with the New York Rangers, Philadelphia Flyers and Los Angeles Kings.
Born Norman James Johnson, he made his initial impact on the ice with the Winnipeg Rangers of the Junior Hockey League (1961 to 1962), prior to being promoted to the NHL during the 1964-1965 season. He had the distinction of being on the Philadelphia Flyers during their inaugural season (1967-1968) and while with them, he produced four consecutive double-digit goals-scored seasons.

He was traded to the Los Angeles Kings (January 1972) in exchange for Ross Lonsberry and Bill Flett. He extended his professional career an additional three-seasons in the World Hockey Association (1972 to 1975). In 302 career regular season NHL games, he totaled 75 goals and 111 assists.
After retiring as a player, he coached in the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League and was the proprietor of a sporting goods store.
