American college and Professional Football Coach
Professional Football Coach, College Football Coach. For six seasons (1986 to 1991), he served as a head coach in the National Football League with the Minnesota Vikings.
Born Jerome Monahan Burns, he began his lengthy coaching career, initially at the University of Hawaii (coaching baseball and football), before a stint at Whittier College and St. Mary’s of the Redford High School in his native Detroit.
He served as an assistant at the University of Iowa (1954 to 1960) and succeeded Forest Evashevski as head coach (1961 to 1965). He joined the professional ranks as an assistant under Vince Lombardi with the Green Bay Packers (1966 to 1967) and was on staff when the Packers captured the first two Super Bowls (1967 and 1968).
From 1968 until 1985, he served as offensive coordinator under Bud Grant with the Minnesota Vikings and contributed to four Super Bowl appearances.
He succeeded Grant as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings and during his tenure, he guided his teams to three playoff berths including an appearance in the 1987 NFC Championship Game. Burns was named to the Vikings Ring of Honor in 2005.
