For eighteen seasons (1965 to 1982), he was a left handed pitcher with the Philadelphia Phillies, Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, Pittsburgh Pirates, Montreal Expos and Kansas City Royals. Born Grant Dwight Jackson, he attended Fostoria High School in Ohio, where he lettered in baseball, football and track.
Signed as an amateur free agent by the Philadelphia Phillies in 1961, he played collegiate baseball at Bowling Green State University, prior to making his Major League debut on September 3, 1965. A relief pitcher for most of his career, he was added to Philadelphia’s starting rotation in 1969 and went on to produce a career-high fourteen wins, as he achieved all star status. After he was acquired by the Orioles, he contributed to Baltimore’s capturing of the American League Pennant in 1971.
He pitched in one game during the 1971 World Series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was traded to the Yankees during the 1976 season in a multiple player deal and contributed to New York’s capturing of the American League Pennant that year. He pitched in one game against the Cincinnati Reds during the 1976 World Series. Jackson was selected by the Seattle Mariners during Major League Baseball’s expansion draft in 1976, however he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates prior to the start of the 1977 season.
He experienced a world championship with the Pirates in 1979 and pitched in four games against the Baltimore Orioles during the 1979 World Series. In 692 career regular season games, he compiled a 86 win, 75 loss record with a lifetime 3.46 ERA, in 1,358 innings pitched. After retiring as a player, he served as a pitching coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1983 to 1985) and Cincinnati Reds (1994 to 1995), in addition to coaching in the Minor Leagues.
