Professional Basketball Player and Coach. He had a storybook career in college and in the National Basketball Association (NBA), both as a player and as a coach.

He attended the University of Southern California (USC) where he was a leader on the 1971 team which went 24-2 and is considered by many the greatest USC basketball team of all time. He played in the NBA from 1972 to 1984. Playing the guard position, he won an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in the 1974 NBA Finals. He played in the NBA Finals again in 1976 as a member of the Phoenix Suns.

In total, he won an NBA title with the Celtics in 1974 and reached the Finals with the Phoenix Suns in 1976. He was a five-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA first-team honoree, and his No. 44 is retired by the Suns. As a coach, he went 318-279 with a trip to the 1993 Finals and two conference semifinals with the Suns. He coached for the Phoenix Suns, Seattle SuperSonics, Sacramento Kings and Pepperdine.

He coached the Suns to the NBA Finals in 1993. He also served as an assistant coach for the Brooklyn Nets from 2014 to 2016. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in September 2019. In August 2020, ESPN reported that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer. He died on January 2, 2021, at age 70.
