Rock Musician. He will be remembered as the founding member and frontman of the 1960s British music ensemble Gerry and the Pacemakers. Influenced by the American music known as Skiffle, he formed the group The Red Mountain Boys during the late 1950s who evolved into The Mars-Bars.

However a conflicted arose when the candy manufacturer of the same name insisted they change their name which resulted in the new moniker Gerry and the Pacemakers. Consisting of Gerry as the lead vocalist and guitarist, his older brother Freddie Marsden on drums, Les Maguire on piano, and John ‘Les’ Chadwick on the bass, they came under the guidance of The Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein which led to a contract with the Laurie record label.

They topped the charts in the United Kingdom with the singles “I Like It” (1963) and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” (1963). In 1964, they scored two number four hits with “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” and “How Do You Do It?” on the American Pop Charts.

The following year (1965), they starred in their own feature film “Ferry Cross the Mersey” and achieved a number six placing with the title song and a Top 30 hit with “It’s Gonna Be Alright.” After the group disbanded in 1969, Marsden acted on London’s West End and later on the British children’s program “The Sooty Show,” prior to reforming the Pacemakers in 1973.
In 2003, he was honored as a Member of the Order of the British Empire. He died from a heart infection.
