Mexican painter
Spanish-born Mexican Painter, Graphic Designer and Sculptor.
He made his first studies in drawing, ceramics and sculpture in 1946, at the Escuela Primaria del Trabajo, in Spain. He arrived in Mexico in 1949, claimed by his father, Francisco Rojo, who had resided in that country as a political refugee since the end of the Spanish Civil War.
A member of the so-called Generación de la Ruptura (Breakaway Generation), he was an important and prominent figure within the arts of Mexico.
When he obtained Mexican nationality, he studied painting at the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving “La Esmeralda,” doing extensive work in painting, graphic design and, sculpture in Mexico and abroad. In 1991 he received the National Prize for Sciences and Arts, in the area of Fine Arts, and the Mexico Prize for Design.
He collaborated in the magazines “Artes de México” and “Revista de la Universidad de México,” in the supplements “México en la Cultura” of the newspaper “Novedades” and “La cultura en México” of the magazine “Siempre!.” Other projects in which he participated are “La Gaceta” of the Economic Culture Fund, “Nuevo Cine” and “Diálogos” magazines; “Artes Visuales” of the Museum of Modern Art; and “Plural” (1971). Rojo was recognized as a fundamental figure in Latin American literature as he was responsible for famous book covers such as “One Hundred Years of Solitude” (1967) by Gabriel García Márquez.
