American jazz musician
An alto saxophonist, he will be remembered for his collaborations with Prince Lasha. Raised in California’s Bay Area, he began playing the English horn, prior to gravitating to the alto saxophone during his mid teenage years. He acquired performance experience with Charles Mingus, prior to pairing with fellow alto saxophonist and flautist Prince Lasha.
Their first recording was the album “The Cry!” (1962) under the Contemporary label. The record is considered landmark for the avant-garde genre. In 1966, he recorded his debut solo album “Staying on the Watch” which featured his then-wife Barbara Donald playing the trumpet.
He rejoined Prince Lasha on the critically-acclaimed album “Firebirds” (1967) on which he played the English horn in addition to the alto saxophone. He recorded under the name “Firebirds” with Lasha a pair of albums “Firebirds, Live at the Berkeley Jazz Festival Volume 1 and Volume 2” (1974). During the course of his career, he recorded as a bandleader or sideman on roughly three-dozen albums.
