He graduated from Alleman Catholic High School and attended Black Hawk College in Moline, Illinois. Before his wife and him started their own pizza business in 1996, he worked at both the Container Corporation of America and Prudential Insurance. In 2010, he decided to run, as a Republican, against incumbent Democratic Rep. Phil Hare in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District.

He was successful in the November general election and went on to serve one term in the United States House of Representatives. In 2012, he was defeated for re-election by Democrat Sheri Bustos. He would try to reclaim his old seat in 2014, but was unsuccessful.

He later moved to Iowa and tried in 2020 for an open House seat in that state’s 2nd Congressional District, but was not successful. He passed away after a battle with cancer.
