He attended both the University of British Columbia, where he earned his B.A. and the University of Washington, where he earned his M.A.. He went on to attend both the London School of Economics and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. From 1956 to 1957, he was a postdoctoral fellow in political economy at the University of Chicago. He later served at the university as both a professor of economics from 1966 to 1971 and as an editor of the Journal of Political Economy.

From 1974 to 2001, he was a member of the faculty at Columbia University. In the 1960s, he introduced a theory that a single currency would be viable in an economic region, or optimum currency area, in which there was free movement of labor and trade.

He would go on to put forward other economic theories that played a key role in the creation of the euro, the single currency adopted by 11 of the 15 members of the European Union on January 1, 1999. His other break with tradition was his belief of using tight money to reduce inflation and cuts in tax rates to give incentives that would cause the real economy to grow.
These theories would lead to him being awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1999. He served as an advisor to numerous leaders including President Ronald Reagan and wrote various notable books on the subject of economics.
