He began as a filmmaker with several exploitation films during the 1960s and graduated to critically-acclaimed, Academy Award associated pictures.
Rush studied Film at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was one of the earliest students who took classes when the school instituted the course. He began as a filmmaker, initially with United States Military, with who he made films about the Korean War.
His first work was “Too Soon to Love” (1960) which he directed, penned the story and produced. During this period, he will be remembered for brutal motorcycle gang picture “Hells Angels on Wheels” (1966) and the drug-themed “Psych-Out” (1967) which were both noteworthy for starring a young Jack Nicholson.
He went on to achieve commercial success with “Freebie and the Bean” (1974, also produced) and received two Academy Award nominations and a Golden Globe nomination for the film “The Stunt Man” (1980 which he also wrote the screenplay and produced.
