For six seasons (1961 to 1966), he played at the tight end, wide receiver and halfback positions in the National Football League with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers. Born William Richard Mack, he made his initial impact on the football field during his years at Hampton High School in Pennsylvania.
He enrolled at the University of Notre Dame where he played collegiate football. Selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 10th round of the 1961 NFL Draft, he totaled 58 career regular season games.
While with the Steelers, he produced career-highs with 25 receptions for 618 yards with 3 touchdowns. Mack, who was a member of the Atlanta Falcons during their inaugural year (1966) was acquired by the Green Bay Packers during the 1966 season and went on to experience an NFL Championship which culminated with a Super Bowl win in January 1967.
After retiring from football, he worked in the manufacturing and engineering industry.
