Pete Neumann Find a Grave
He played at the position of defensive end for fourteen seasons (1951 to 1964) in the Canadian Football League with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
Born Peter Michael Neumann in St. Catharines, Ontario, he began playing football while attending high school at the St Catharines Collegiate. At 19, he was recruited by both the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats. He never played a single game with the Toronto Argonauts, but instead signed with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1951.
With the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats, he was a member of the 41st Grey Cup Winning Championship Team in 1953, the 45th Grey Cup Winning Championship Team in 1957, and 51st Grey Cup Winning Championship Team in 1963.
During these times he was coached by legendary personalities such as Carl M. Voyles, Jim Trimble, and Ralph Sazio (who was also his teammate), while his teammates included such greats as Merle Hapes, Vince Mazza, Jake Gaudur, Jerry McTaggart, Ray Truant, Eddie Bevan, Zeno Karcz, Tommy Grant, Ralph Toohy, Bronko Nagurski Jr., Angelo Mosca, Willie Bethea, Hardiman Cureton, Bobby Kuntz, and Bernie Faloney, among many others. He would play a total of fourteen seasons with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats until his retirement following the 1964 season. He was known for his quickness, ability to read plays, and for his hitting with devastating power.

He earned respect from players, coaches, and fans alike. His Canadian Football League career consists of some 184 games played, 2 interception returns, 15 interception return yards, 7.5 interception return average, 13 interception return long, 1 interception return touchdowns, 5 fumble return touchdowns, and 33 points. His many honors include being named a nine-time Canadian Football League East All-Star in 1953, 1954, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1961, and 1964, a Toronto Globe East All-Star in 1956, a Shrine East All-Star in 1957 and 1958, and a Canadian Football League All-Star in 1964.
He was also a three-time nominee for the Schenley Most Outstanding Canadian Award in 1957, 1961, and again in 1962. For his contributions to the sport of football, he was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1979, and as a Member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats Wall of Honour in 2011.
He is also honored at Tim Horton’s Field at Ivor Wynne Stadium (formerly the Civic Centre), and on the Hamilton Tiger Cat’s Walk of Fame, both in Hamilton, Ontario. He passed away in his native St. Catharines, Ontario, at the age of 88. He was predeceased by wife Edith who passed away in 2017.
