Paul Foytack (1930-2021),
For thirteen seasons (1953 and 1955 to 1964), he was a pitcher with the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels. Born Paul Eugene Foytack, he made his initial impression on the baseball diamond during his years at Scranton Technical High School and contributed to his team’s capturing a state championship in 1948.
Signed as an amateur free agent by the Detroit Tigers in 1949, he made his Major League debut on April 21, 1953. After struggling with an elevated ERA, he was sent back to the Minor Leagues during the 1954 season and returned to Detroit’s Major League roster in 1955 as a reliever.
The following season (1956), he secured a spot in the Tiger’s starting rotation and went on to produce a career high 15 wins, a total he would match in 1958. In 312 career regular season games, he compiled a 86 win, 87 loss record with a lifetime 4.14 ERA, in 1,498 innings pitched. After retiring from baseball, he worked in sales for a industrial rubber plastics company outside of Detroit.
